G. Love and Special Sauce: The Warfield, San Francisco 3.13.09

G. Love and his band stopped in San Francisco to throw down a very buttoned up concert at the legendary Warfield Theater. Starting things off nice and easy, G. Love kicked the night off with a tight opening medley that included his stoner anthem, “Who’s Got the Weed,” which he seamlessly blended into a very smooth version of Peter Tosh’s “Legalize It.”

After getting the crowd warmed up, G. Love rolled through a wide range of tracks from his entire library. And about midway through his set, the rapping bluesman switched it up and showed off a different side with a few old fashioned BB King-style, slide guitar blues jams.

Switching it up again, G. Love proceeded to get the crowd moving with more booty-shaking material like “Can’t Go Back to Jersey” and “Stepping Stones.” But the highlight of the night came towards the end of the set when he busted into his classic material like “Cold Beverage.” The band stepped up on this track particular, whipping out a tenor sax, while keyboardist Mark Boyce threw down a super funky, rapid-fire solo.

G. Love completely revamped his website recently with a ton of bonus videos and tracks. Tune into www.philadelphonic.com to access an exclusive “Track of the Week,” or check out G. Love’s video page to access a series of web-exclusive videos.

You can catch G. Love performing June 4-7 at this year’s Wakarusa Festival (http://www.wakarusa.com/) in Arkansas along with the Black Crowes, Galactic, and Matisyahu.
