A Big Pin On The Map, From The Pen of Dan Costello

I’m writing this from the kitchen of a lovely home in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where my girlfriend Jess and I have been staying with her sister’s family for the past few days. Though I’d intended to have more concrete performance dates lined up, I didn’t jump on it in time so I decided to focus more on the family time and dig up some "open mic" opportunities. . .potential venues for next time and possibly a gig while I’m here.

I got a bite for Tuesday night at the relatively new tap room attached to Hallenbrick Brewery. Rex Warren, a regular player here in the area, was the host along with Walter who was playing a G&L Strat-like guitar through a Fender Blues Jr. (which is my basic electric setup so we hit it off right away). I got a great response from the crowd, the other musicians, and especially the owner… who invited me back to play a gig the very next night! I came back Wednesday and played for about three hours to a nearly packed house taking requests, selling CDs, and meeting some great new folks in the area.

I had been asked by Rex to join him after my Wednesday Hallenbrick gig at a swanky spot on the old Route 66 called the Nob Hill Bar & Grill. Jess and I sat back to a nice dinner and grinned about my unexpected success at the Hallenbrick show earlier. The meal at Nob Hill Bar & Grill was absolutely amazing– reasonably priced, fantastic flavors, perfect portions… and the dessert, a warm bread pudding with dates, pears, chai ice cream and a ginger cream sauce. Unbelievable.

Albuquerque will definitely be a return spot for an upcoming tour. Probably a great turn-around point for a two-week loop. This will certainly be a BIG pin on the map!
