Most people probably know Big Bad Voodoo Daddy as one of the core acts behind the swing revival that took place in the mid-90s, rising to success alongside acts like the Squirrel Nut Zippers and Cherry Poppin’ Daddies. Even with a handful of hits making their way across mainstream airwaves, the “kings of swing” have never wavered when it comes to sticking to the traditional jazz they built their own sound on. This may be most true when it comes to their aptly titled new album Louie Louie Louie, due out June 16th on Savoy Jazz. The album pays homage to three towering jazz legends: Louis Armstrong, Louis Jordan and Louis Prima. The album offers a look at the evolution of swing, jazz and popular music through the songs and personalities of these three giants. It also finds a band that is nearly three decades into their career sharper and more energized than ever before.
“We really want people to know about these great men that have so deeply influenced us as, and perhaps help spark a new creative interest in them and their music,” reflects Big Bad Voodoo front man Scotty Morris.
Today Glide Magazine is excited to premiere the band’s vibrant take on Louis Jordan’s “Jack, You’re Dead”. Originally recorded in 1946, the tune is a feel-good jazz romp despite what it’s grim title suggests. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s take on this classic song is both fresh and fateful, preserving the playful lyrics and swinging groove.
