SONG PREMIERE: Cori Elliott Reflects on Relationship with Dark Trip Hop Meditation “Lie to Me”

Los Angeles-based alternative pop artist Cori Elliott offers up a hybrid of unique musical stylings on Between Two Places, her gripping six-track EP due out August 21. Originally from the well-known music town of Austin, Texas, Elliott relocated to Los Angeles while still in high school where she first started to act on her eclectic musical influences by learning to play guitar, writing songs and developing her range of vocal capabilities. Following years of being in a band and offering her vocal talents to other artists, she set off to write her debut solo project drawing from her folk roots while incorporating an array of dreamy synth soundscapes.

Once Elliott made that move to L.A., her musical future quickly began taking shape. She drew attention from several veteran music industry professionals who helped guide her as she progressed from playing in her bedroom to singing lead vocals and playing bass for very well-received progressive rock trio called The Vim Dicta. The band was named one of the “Best Live Bands in L.A.” two years in a row by LA Weekly. The group worked and studied with legendary A&R developers like Tom Zutant (Guns & Roses, Edie Brickell), producers such as Michael Beinhorn (Herbie Hancock, Soundgarden) and recorded with engineers such as Niko Bolas (Neil Young, Melissa Etheridge) and Shelly Yakus (Tom Petty, Stevie Nicks) at major L.A. studios such as Capitol Records and toured the U.K. for the better part of a year.

In late 2018, Elliott took an exit from The Vim Dicta and this is when she began penning songs for Between Two Places. During the interim she provided her vocal talents singing background on recordings—and in performance—with emerging and hit artists such as former Atlantic Records artist Robert Francis. The new EP bridges the gap in Elliott’s musical journey from the place she was at during The Vim Dicta to her debut solo project.

Today Glide is excited to premiere “Lie To Me,” one of the standout tracks on the new album. The song finds Elliott focusing her lyrical talent on the feeling of being trapped in a certain kind of relationship. Her vocals and a simple, atmospheric beat bring to mind the sensual and mysterious trip hop sounds of Portishead. While the music builds into a dramatic, synth-driven industrial beat, Elliott also lets her powerful enchanting vocals soar. The song is a perfect showcase for Elliott’s dynamic power as an artist and her ability to take her sound into new terrain while also channeling some very cool influences.

Elliott describes the inspiration behind the song:

“The inspiration behind ‘Lie To Me’ comes from feeling trapped in an on and off again relationship as well as the circumstances of your own life. it’s about that battle between the little voice that’s in you to push yourself vs. the one that’s telling you can’t and how easy it is to do nothing. The idea of the ‘Lie To Me’ tag is that sometimes you need someone you trust/love to really push you in a sort of reverse physiological way to get you out of your own head and continue the growth toward your better self.”
