Prolific singer-songwriter Justin Townes Earle, who like his father Steve, produced meaningful lyrically driven music that spoke of the plight of the working man and the “small” guy, died unexpectedly today at the age of 38. Earle has never strayed away from talking about his past battles with addiction, and more recently became married and a father.
The news was confirmed on his official Facebook page on Sunday night.
“It is with tremendous sadness that we inform you of the passing of our son, husband, father and friend Justin,” the statement reads. “So many of you have relied on his music and lyrics over the years and we hope that his music will continue to guide you on your journeys. You will be missed dearly Justin.”
Earle’s label New West posted the following on its official Facebook page Sunday night…
It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Justin Townes Earle. Justin was uniquely talented and we are all devastated with this terrible loss. Our hearts are with his family and loved ones at this time. Further details are forthcoming.
In his last album, 2019’s Saint of Lost Causes, Earle had a poignant outward look on the world when he focused on the downtrodden saying – “these are individuals and communities all over the country suffering from the ‘great divide” and an increasingly expanding class system that’s eroding the middle. “I was trying to look through the eyes of America. Because I believe in the idea of America- That everybody’s welcome here and has a right to be here.”
Of course the events of 2020 change everything now and perhaps because of it the world has lost one of its finest singer-songwriters. Stay tuned for more details and in the meantime, please revisit Glide’s 2017 interview with JTE.

Nothing is predictable in this world. 2020 has been the most tragic year of the decade. Who thought we would start like this?
