Hal Cannon writes his songs at the intersection of the Mojave Desert, Great Basin, and Colorado Plateau in southern Utah, on the edge of Zion National Park. He is best known for his work touring and recording with 3hattrio. Together for a decade, the group has six highly-acclaimed albums to their credit and has toured extensively, particularly in Europe, where they were named the best band of 2018 in the annual AmericanaUK Readers’ Poll. They have had hit performances at the prestigious Celtic Connections, Tønder Festival and the Gothenburg Culture Festival.Â
On the latest single, “Don’t Look Back”, it’s as if Hal Cannon summons the very air of the Southwest United States and gently blows the landscape itself into wherever the song is being listened to. Much like the history and scenery of the American West, “Don’t Look Back” is at the same time exciting yet stark, austere but full of vibrancy. Without overcomplicating matters or depending on effects or production tricks, Cannon uses sheer authenticity and bluntness to create a sound all his own while showing deep respect for those who came before him. The new full-length album, Nothin’ Lastin’ , is due out Oct. 7.Â

Nice song Hal. Is the photo Hal’s half of American Gothic? The three pieces of barbed wire have me curious. Very well done as always.
