2022 saw folk artist Molly Tuttle finally getting the praise her style deserves. The folk artist released her album Crooked Tree which was greeted with positive reviews across the board (including Glide’s 20 Best Albums of the Year) and even landed Tuttle two Grammy nods for Best New Artist and Best Bluegrass Album. Continuing her hot streak, Tuttle made her late-night TV debut with a performance of the title track from her 2022 album. Along with her band Golden Highway, Tuttle premiered her finger-plucking style to a global audience with a stirring performance.
While Tuttle’s solo career only kicked off in 2017 with the release of her debut EP Rise, she has been making her rounds through the Folk, Bluegrass, and Americana scene for quite some time. Her career started when she started performing with her dad’s bluegrass band, which led to her and her father recording an album of duets, The Old Apple Tree was recorded and released when Tuttle was only 13. She has since become one of the most sought-after musicians working in her respective genre, collaborating with the likes of John Mailander and Billy Strings. Her signature style of guitar-plucking has made her a shining star in the bluegrass community but after last year, the rest of the world is slowly recognizing the talents Tuttle has been sharpening since she started playing guitar at 8.
Tuttle’s performance of “Crooked Tree” was everything you can hope for and more. Her plucking was on full display as her fingers danced with the guitar strings to create a warmth that burst through your TV. The same rickety tree Tuttle stands next to on the album cover acted as the backdrop for her and the Golden Highway, who also didn’t disappoint with their picking either.
