In today’s music landscape, there can often be a lack of authenticity. It can be hard to tell if artists mean what they sing about, let alone actually going through that themselves. If you’re seeking for something very real, look no further than Detroit-based artist, Ohly. Although a singer-songwriter, Ohly is first and foremost a storyteller. Ohly’s stories articulate what it’s like to be human – hopeful, troubling, confusing, romantic, and filled with all the weird details of life. Ohly has been able to take his platform and present it by getting to open for national acts including Bad Bad Hats and The Brook and the Bluff. He also got to perform at SXSW in Austin in 2022.

We’d like to showcase Ohly’s next evolution of telling his story with his latest single, “R&P,” featured on his debut LP, Miracle (available Fall 2023). The LP showcases tracks ranging from folk, indie rock, country, jazz, and punk. In March, he released the first single from the upcoming LP, “Maybe it’s you.”

Today Glide is excited to offer an exclusive premiere of “R&P” ahead of its official release on May 5th. Through “R&P” and the rest of the upcoming LP, Ohly shares his own stories, observations, and insights on love, loss, nostalgia and heartbreak. Although a darker song in lyrical context, “R&P” is presented in an upbeat manner, which can be a metaphor for the challenges and triumphs of life. The ups and downs we go through in our lifetime.

Regarding “R&P,” Ohly states that “Lyrically, this track is extremely personal and specific yet still a bit vague because it covers a tragedy most people don’t encounter, one that I only experienced second hand. Musically, it’s quite an interesting song due to the recording process. After it was about 80% complete in the studio, the producer, John, recommended I play a guitar part (that ended up being the rhythm guitar) and it completely changed the vibe. We ended up scratching everything we recorded, changing it from a 90’s pop rock song, to an alternative, string filled, vocal layered, Ethan Gruska-inspired tune”.

Ohly added “I hope R&P allows someone experiencing loss to find solace in music, and I hope everyone else will soak in and enjoy the sonic landscape John created”.
