LISTEN: On “Unkind,” Brandon Carswell Mixes Simplicity With Tasteful Folk

There’s a simplicity that accents strength in the songwriting on Brandon Carswell’s new single “Unkind.” There’s no more instrumentation than there needs to be. With just an acoustic guitar, tasteful drummer, lead guitar towards the end, and a big round bass tone Paul McCartney would be proud of. Melodically and in chord progression the song has a slightly familiar sound, but if nothing else it’s a songwriting style that’s worth repeating. Bonus points for the moderately psychedelic departure at the end of the tune.

“Unkind” sways back and forth effortlessly between bittersweet sorrow to an almost enigmatic hope, the simple yet warmly gilded guitars, marching rhythms, and understated vocals paint a poignant picture of the complexity of love and the often difficult and heartbreaking process of uncovering the truth of who we really are.”
