Craft Recordings Serves Up Vinyl Reissue of Mal Waldron Sextet’s ‘Mal/2’ (ALBUM REVIEW)

Mal Waldron is a giant of a jazz pianist, having recorded over 100 albums under is own name, performing on at least 70 for other band leaders, and also being the main accompanist for Billie Holiday until her death. For the next installment of Original Jazz Classics, Craft Recordings is reissuing one of Waldron’s most loved albums, Mal/2. Mal Waldron’s Mal/2 is a captivating and introspective jazz album that showcases the pianist’s remarkable talent and innovative approach to music. Recorded in 1957 for Prestige Records, this album stands as a testament to Waldron’s unique style and ability to push the boundaries of traditional jazz.

The album opens with the track “From This Moment On,” a Cole Porter composition that immediately draws listeners in with its infectious rhythm and Waldron’s skillful piano playing. His use of space and phrasing sets the tone for the rest of the record, revealing his deep understanding of dynamics and musical storytelling.

Waldron’s prowess as a composer is evident in his original composition “One By One.” The piece takes on a more melancholic and reflective tone, allowing him to explore the emotional depths of the music. The interplay between the instruments, including the sensitive contributions from bassist Julian Euell and drummer Al Dreares, creates a sense of unity and cohesion throughout the track. One of the standout moments on the album is the rendition of Dorthy Fields and Jerome Kern’s classic “The Way You Look Tonight” Waldron’s interpretation showcases his affinity for taking a songs style, like Frank Sinatra’s famous version, and infusing it with his own distinctive flair. The intricate chord progressions and unexpected rhythmic shifts demonstrate Waldron’s deep appreciation for experimentation, making this version a memorable highlight of the record. The album’s closing track, “Potpourri,” picks up the tempo and injects a sense of groove and swing. Waldron’s infectious energy and the tight interplay between the sextet’s members, including the great John Coltrane on tenor sax, creates an uplifting and spirited finale to the album.

Mal/2 is a sophisticated and captivating jazz album that demonstrates Mal Waldron’s versatility as a pianist and composer. Whether he is delving into introspective ballads or swinging with exuberance, Waldron’s artistry is on full display throughout the entire album. As with every Original Jazz Classic release, so far, the dynamics of the vinyl pressing is superb. Overall, Mal/2 is a must-listen for jazz enthusiasts and anyone looking to immerse themselves in the brilliance of a true musical innovator. Mal Waldron’s contributions to the jazz world are profound, and this album stands as a testament to his enduring legacy as one of the genre’s great pioneers.
