A genre like punk can conjure up many images for many different people. Regardless of the band, tempo, sound, or city you think of when you hear the name “punk”, there is one universal truth that strings all of these different subgenres together. As long as you can play in your style and make it rock, welcome to the punk family. An open mind is needed to enter any section of punk and in the case of Sleeveens, their mind is brimming with nothing but the purest punk imaginable. The ferocious four-piece is gearing up to unleash their proper self-titled debut on February 9 but before all eleven tracks are released, we must acquaint ourselves with the brand-new single.
“Metallica Font” is the new track from the upcoming Sleeveens LP and it is nothing short of spectacular. Blistering tempos are greeted by lo-fi tones for some otherworldly textures. “Metallica Font” follows the album’s lead single “Aretha Franklin”, the latter taking a much harsher sonic approach. This new single shows The Sleeveens’ true range, their songwriting ability is more prominent than ever. As the band prepares to crash land and leave a meteor-sized mark on punk with their upcoming LP, “Metallica Font” is here to welcome you to the self-titled effort. The murky textures are cut in half by searing vocals and expert melodic phrasing for a single that should have you sprinting to hear the rest of the album on February 9.
“It’s a song about friendship. When I was a kid I used to pretend I loved Metallica just so I could scrawl their logo all over my books and my desk at school. I also loved applying their font to other words and phrases that I would scribble around the place,” says an enthusiastic Stef Murphy. “If I wrote your name on my school bag in Metallica font that would be a sign that I thought you were pretty cool !! It has a playfulness to it but it’s a pretty genuine statement about fellowship and love. I don’t dislike Metallica at all, I just think their font is way better than their music could ever be – it’s an amazing font!!! I’d love for Metallica to hear it!!”
The Sleeveens started out off the beaten path of punk’s history. It all started when Irish-born Stef Murphy met guitar tech Jamie Mechan in Nashville. Mechan was running 302 Sound Studios at the time and the pair started recording almost immediately. The four-piece was rounded out by drummer Ryan Sweeney and Eli Steele and thus, The Sleeveens were born. The band quickly released their debut single “Give My Regards To the Dancing Girls” via Sweet Time Records. The single caught the attention of the good people over at the legendary punk label Dirtnap Records. The Sleeveens and Dirtnap Records are two preparing the release of the band’s self-titled debut and it is gearing up to be an album we won’t forget.
