Weirdo Wednesday: The Curious “Champagne” Scene From The Who’s Film ‘Tommy’

Speaking of birthdays (see Tuesday’s Gone), the legendary Roger Daltry recently celebrated his 80th earlier this month (March 1st). It goes without saying that The Who was certainly one of the most progressive and innovative bands of their era (or of any era for that matter), and as evidenced by this clip from Tommy, they could get plenty weird as well.

The entire film (based on the classic 1969 album of the same name) is quite a trip to say the least, with Daltry playing the leading role brilliantly, which helped bring an already captivating album even more to life thanks to his outstanding performance. It’s a movie chalked full of bizarre, surrealist moments, perhaps none more so than this “Champagne” sequence that features, among other things, a nervous breakdown, a flood of (suggestive) suds, and beans…. lots and lots of (apparently delightful) beans. It’s simultaneously disgusting, erotic, and hilarious all at the same time. And weird of course, it’s also that. Enjoy, and if you suddenly have a craving for champagne and beans for dinner tonight, you can thank us.
