With today being the first official day of Spring (which technically arrives tonight), our trip down MTV Spring Break memory lane continues with this iconic performance of “Creep” by Radiohead when they were practically at their infancy as a band. What’s particularly striking about this performance is just how at odds the band is with the broader cheerful/poolside scene. Thom Yorke’s (who’s dressed like a 60s-era Batman villain) perpetually dour vibes stand in stark contrast to the sunny warm atmosphere that surrounds him, but the power of his performance (and that of the broader band of course) ultimately win out here. Radiohead seems to relish casting their gloomy and harsh Britian-sized shadow over the proceedings, which is both amusing and impressive to behold. They were of course just getting started, as they would go on to revolutionize alternative rock in subsequent years, but here they are, newly famous, raw, somewhat visceral, but compelling, as always:
