LISTEN: My Mom Is Here Creates Infectious Jazz-Leaning Pop On “Didn’t Sleep Tonight”

My Mom Is Here is the brainchild of Samantha Seiff (vocalist) and Nick Sare (pianist). They suckered their talented Columbia jazz pals, Aidan Speckhard (drums), Stephen Park (guitar), and Ryan Daar (bass), into playing tunes with them on an NYC rooftop. Ever since, My Mom Is Here has been rocking worlds with head-banging originals and innovative covers. The group writes songs inspired by artists like Fleetwood Mac, The Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, and Tedeschi Trucks. My Mom Is Here released their debut single, “Didn’t Sleep Tonight,” in June 2024. The band will release their second single, “Memory Jar,” sometime in August.

The expansive nature of neo-soul and the freedom of jazz is wrapped in a neat pop bow on My Mom Is Here’s “Didn’t Sleep Tonight.” Seiff takes a cabaret-style vocal approach to the soaring, warm horns and funky keys. For a debut single, it is impressive the band found a winning formula so early into their musical journey. My Mom Is Here blends cheeky songwriting with its fusion prowess and shows signs of seasoned musicians landing on a unique voice while allowing their ambitions to be the catalyst. The band can create lush textures and swaying melodies while still finding time for toe-tapping tempos, courtesy of Speckhard. My Mom Is Here certainly makes their presence felt with “Didn’t Sleep Tonight,” a stunning single with grooves you can dance to and lyrics you shout along with.

“‘Didn’t Sleep Tonight’ is our debut single. The song is inspired by a crazy night out. I (Sam) basically wrote the whole thing in an Uber at 6 am, and then I brought the song to my boyfriend Nick,” explains Seiff. “He came up with this super catchy bass riff, and then we were pretty much off to the races. Nick is also a founding member of NYC indie band Melt the Band. This song, in particular, definitely has flavors of that NYC indie band thing, but it’s also retro and something totally its own. We’re super proud of it!”
