Swansun is a psych rock band from Burlington, New Jersey. The group began with Alan DeCecco on guitar, Evan Ayrer on Bass, Evan Pensabene on drums, and Ryan Foor on synth to play a one-off show, but after the set, they decided it was too good to stop. They began writing more songs and playing more shows and added Nick Bsales on standing drums, Dave Mercoli on guitar, and Sidney Riley on drums. Influenced by groups such as the Beatles, Grateful Dead, King Gizzard, and Steely Dan, the group strives to combine classic and modern influences to create their own unique sound.
When you press play on Swansun’s “Sunday Driver,” you feel an instant sense of solace. The lead single from their upcoming record has the band capturing the comfort of short sleeves and spring breezes while still finding time to unfurl in a grandiose manner. The vocals are gentle and lush, while surf-rock-inspired guitars and cartoonishly bright tones drive the arrangement. Swansun was able to make a colorful and fun pop record while still having the ability to express the aspects of their artistry that make them so unique. They touch on their soft-rock influences while the vocal tones give the song a woozy feeling to express their passion for psychedelic tones. Swansun’s “Sunday Driver” provides us with a look into what is shaping up to be a landmark release for the band while standing on its own as an infectious performance with a knack for putting your mind at ease.
“‘Sunday Driver’ is the first single from our upcoming concept record It’s Not Adding Up and our first release featuring Dave on lead guitar and Sidney on drums,” explains the band. “The concept of the record is about trying to pass math class to graduate high school, and this song represents the need to take a break and relax.”
