LISTEN: Sally Mango’s “Birds Knew It” Employs Soulful Funk Minimalism For A Moving Love Song

Sally Mango is a six-piece R&B/pop/Funk band based in San Francisco, CA. These musical Californians love making music together and have a dedicated, ever-growing fanbase they call their “succulent mangosteens.” Their music is a postmodern take on harvesting love and combating the demons of conformity.

The band battles preconceived notions by implementing funky grooves into their soulful rendition of modern pop, and “Birds Knew It” displays this sentiment beautifully. The arrangement is minimal yet vibrant, with blaring horns and catchy rhythms being held in a tight pop structure. Even the vocals employ a simplistic melodic phrasing, but when these small elements collide, you get a danceable arrangement with a vocal performance that radiates warmth. The playful song is refreshingly fun-loving and details an optimistic tale of love finding its way. The band combines the innocence of pop with the swing of jazz to land on a soulful middle ground to display their vivid imagery. Sally Mango’s “Birds Knew It” is a relaxing yet moving performance with an enticing vocal performance and funky undertones.

“‘Birds Knew It’ is inspired by Cole Porter’s lyrics on his iconic song ‘Let’s Fall in Love,’ explains the band. “In our version, the lyrics tell the story of all the elements of nature that know that a couple is falling in love before they realize it themselves.”
