LISTEN: Elephant Path Adds Modern Psychadelia To A Folk Classic On “Time and Money”

Delafaye, the moniker of Andrew Shockley, recorded and produced the original “Time and Money” by himself at home on a 32-track recorder and computer in a small apartment over an art studio next to a bar called the Hilltop Tavern in Louisville, Kentucky, which is where he is from. Since its release, it has taken on a life of its own, accumulating over 5 million streams and leading to Delafaye playing high-profile opening slots for San Fermin at Headliners Music Hall in Louisville, KY, and Cory Brannan, Blank Range, Arlie and many others, as well as him being nominated in the Singer-Songwriter of the Year category at the Louisville Music Awards, eventually coming in runner up to Joan Shelley.

Elephant Path is a native of California who spent many formative years in Louisville, Kentucky–which is where he first laid musical roots, first as a full band, at one point joining Delafaye’s touring band, before striking out on his own as he has become a solo studio-based project pursuing the creation of a catalog of records; building a world for the latest incarnation of Elephant Path to exist in, with a long-awaited debut album Expectations released in the summer or 2023. Expectations made waves, charting at #155 on the NACC Radio Charts in the US, as Elephant Path followed it up with the EP Keep Walking, opening a running series of EPs set to showcase what an all-encompassing singer-songwriter he is. Keep Walking’s blues-infused rock & roll via lush acoustics continue exploring topics of love and experience as Elephant Path opens a new chapter of his journey.

Now on his new label home, Street Mission Records, he has found an outlet for his constant stream of new music, with the mantra of “Always serving the song,” which he stays true to on “Time and Money,” which was released with the original song on a double A-Side single through Street Mission Records.

The mark of a good songwriter is how their words travel across time. Whether an original composition achieves longevity on its own or a reworking of a classic shoots up the charts thanks to musical advancements, a beautifully written song can outlive multiple generations. In the case of “Time and Money,” both scenarios are valid. Elephant Path takes a small piece of singer/songwriter history and flips into a psychedelic folk ballad with gentle tones and sweeping melodies. Path’s hushed vocals complement the sentimental songwriting beautifully as the artist makes the arduous task of making someone else’s words your own look seamless. The artist captured the rawness of Delafaye’s original while creating an arrangement that brings the song’s sentiment to modern times. There was a possibility of Delafaye’s hit single “Time and Money” being lost in the history books, but not anymore. Elephant Path’s refreshing take on the single breathes new life into the moving poetry of the song while showcasing Path’s dedication to expanding his creativity to its furthest extent.

“I’ve always felt a connection with ‘Time and Money,’” explains Elephant Path. “It’s a song I greatly admire, and I’m honored to have it released with the original recording. I hope I get the chance to play it live again with Delafaye.”
