Deep Friday Blues: Skip James Proves Undeniably Unique With “Killing Floor Blues” Live 1967

The concise impact of Skip James’ “Killing Floor Blues” belies the emcee’s introduction to the iconic musician in the accompanying video from 1967. Having pursued various vocations–including that of a preacher (predating Little Richard’s similar conversion)–James’ eventual dedication to music only highlights what a travesty it is he may be known mostly for Cream’s cover of “I’m So Glad” off their debut album Fresh Cream. Hearing his odd guitar tunings and equally idiosyncratic vocal style, it’s hardly a surprise how the Mississippi native was accorded recognition for his work in the Sixties. Still, it may be fair to say that, among the many revered blues musicians who finally received their due from younger generations, none was more deserving than Skip James of the accolades and acclamation.
