Tim Lappin is the creative force behind Casual Male and began recording and releasing music of his own under this catchy moniker after spending years playing bass and touring in bands for the likes of Pepi Ginsberg, Chet Faker, and others. The impetus to begin putting his own songs out into the world came about after he began assessing his journey through life. “I’ve always considered myself to be someone who goes with the flow,” shares Lappin, “but the last few years have been a reckoning with what I want, and how t achieve it.”

The result is the forthcoming release of the self-titled debut album out on October 4th, which hones in on Lappin’s contagious indie power pop talents. And while there have been plenty of songs about specific automobiles over time, most are the subject of either truck tough or sleek curves, but what about the unpretentious sedan or station wagon? Well, let’s hear it for a Honda or for Casual Male’s case – the ” Hondo Civic.”

Glide is premiering Casual Male’s “Hondo Civic” which melts the brainy sharp alt-rock of Beck and the triumphant nostalgic guitar rock nods of War on Drugs. With a triumphant catchy chorus praising the “1986 station wagon that goes 73 MPH,” let’s start our Monday with a mix of modern sounds and ’80 vintage inspiration.

“The bass line of this song I wrote 10 years ago when I was in the band Companion fronted by Pepi Ginsberg. I brought it in, and while everyone liked it, it didn’t fit. I found an old recording of it, and wrote the lyrics over the groove in 30 minutes. It all just came out. It’s all about being young, and the world being ahead of you. You have this car that by all standards is a junker but you worship it. It represents freedom, that and no one  but you can really tell you what something is worth.”
