Deep Friday Blues: Willie Cobbs Warbling Harmonica Dominates At King Biscuit Blues Festival

In as much as the Allman Brothers Band made “You Don’t Love Me” a central touchpoint of their concerts throughout their forty-five-year career, it only stands to reason Willie Cobbs would open a 2017 show with the same song after a deservingly heartfelt homage of an introduction. Recorded before a raucous crowd at the King Biscuit Blues Festival in Helena, AR., Cobbs and his quintet infuse the song with a jaunty, carefree air, their nonchalance no doubt deriving from its regular inclusion in their own setlists. Still, the shift in tempo at roughly the midpoint of the seven minutes-plus is the work of a savvy ensemble, as is Willie’s warbling harmonica, which punctuates this performance.
