If you’ve felt the urge to dust off some characteristically dark albums from your record collection lately, chances are you’re not alone. It is late October, but whatever the case, sometimes, in your quest for campiness, you might rediscover some music that may be stylistically “dark” but is good enough that it transcends the season regardless.
A case in point for this writer was Floodland, the classic album released by The Sisters of Mercy way back in 1987. And while most people would characterize that album/band as “gothic”, lead singer/founder Andrew Eldritch never really saw it that way, considering The Sisters as first and foremost a rock band at their core. And after witnessing this electrifying live performance of “Lucretia My Reflection” from 1988, you’d be hard-pressed to argue with that assessment. That bassline and beat, along with the rush of the guitar solo, are good enough for any occasion in our book, although a little sexy darkness this time of the year admittedly makes it all a little more fitting/fun now, doesn’t it? You hear the roar of the big machine? Crank it!
