The Coral Gables are a rock-and-roll trio based in New York City and Philadelphia, USA. They are bravely pioneering the “outlaw indie” genre—modern indie rock with a flavor inspired by the outlaw country of old. They have two EPs currently streaming and a hotly anticipated album due for release in 2025.
With a stripped-down aesthetic and a veteran spirit, The Coral Gables crafts a statement piece with “Heavy Load.” The tight twang of the arrangement juxtaposes the slurring yet honed croons for an enticing and refreshing take on modern folk rock. With only a few releases under their belt, The Coral Gables have already carved out a lane for themselves in the burgeoning genre. That lane is lined with fantastically passionate vocals that bend every which way as they navigate the smokey tones and Honky Tonk tendencies of the instrumentation to create a rootsy, swaying balladry. The star of the show is the complex vocal melodies and how the equally cartoonish acrobatics of the guitar can keep up with them. The way the guitars and melodies interact gives “Heavy Load” an otherworldly atmosphere as The Coral Gables establish an inventive sound that stomps and screams its way into your hearts.
“The ‘mansion named for a billionaire’ line refers to The Phillips Collection. It’s a good museum, and we recommend visiting it to see some paintings, some famous, some not. We’re not sure if Mr. Phillips was actually a billionaire, but the word ‘billionaire’ had more punch than the word millionaire,” explains the band. “We apologize to his ghost for our creative license. The Europeans and middle-brow hacks were, however, completely real. There really is no way to escape the tyranny of the middle brow. “
