LISTEN: Pynch Details Modern Lonliness With Colorful Synths and Explosive Melodies On “The Supermarket”

Pynch is a genuine DIY band that has built up a dedicated global fan base through a combination of tenacity, wistful lo-fi, and life-affirming lyricism. On their debut album, Howling at a Concrete Moon, they followed through on the promise of their early singles and delivered ten stunning tracks that provide a snapshot of what it is to be young and adrift at this strange junction of history.

On one of their first pieces of new music since their 2023 debut, Pynch crafts a space-aged indie rock anthem with “The Supermarket.” Splashes of whirling synths accent familiar indie rock tones as the band prepares fans for what is already promising to be an expansive new chapter for the band. The arrangement strikes a delicate balance between familiar and alien as the hook provides pure slacker rock bliss only for the new wave-inspired verses and solo land “The Supermarket” in a league of its own. While the arrangement leans on the otherworldly, the lyrics of this song tell another story. The songwriting tells a modern tale of desperation for a sense of home when home has become less of a comfort after too much isolation. “I didn’t know I needed saving” is the type of lyric that appears simple and surface level. Still, when delivered with a poetic longing against Pynch’s sonic landscape’s searing chaos, the story behind “The Supermarket” is revealed. Pynch’s new single is a head-spinning journey of someone lost in the hecticness of a chronically online generation and their attempts to make sense of it all. “The Supermarket” is a staggering example of the band’s pure chemistry as each element comes together for a hauntingly beautiful portrait of navigating the modern world.

“This has been one of our favourite songs since we wrote it. I think it captures a sort of optimistic melancholy. One of my best friends, Macgregor Marshfield, directed the video as well, which was an awesome experience – it was so much fun to shoot, and we’re really happy with how it came out,” explains Pynch songwriter Spencer.
