Lawrence, Kansas-based recording artist Prince Brendan will release a series of singles in 202, leading up to his debut album, Love Songs for Sickly Girls. He plays all the instruments and acts as the recording engineer, too, writing and recording in a creaky old house filled with keyboards, drums, and guitars.
From Brendan’s cozy home recording studio comes an infectious waltz that toes the line between sentimental pop and folksy swing balladry. “Suzanne’s Finery” seamlessly blends pure heartbreak with jovial melodies, presenting Brendan’s infectious individuality to the listener in a wholly unique way. The genre-blurring ballad is both lyrically vulnerable and sonically loose, allowing the artist’s poignant lyrics to employ a danceable energy. For a debut single, it would seem that Brendan has already found a sonic world he can call home, and it is presented here as a quaint love letter. While “Suzanne’s Finery” feels deeply personal, Brendan’s approach to songwriting leaves just enough room for the listener to picture themselves in the moment of love’s strife that inspired the tune. Brendan is just getting started with his ambitious 2025 release schedule, and he kicks things off with an undeniable piece of vulnerable, soulful folk. “Suzanne’s Finery” is a moving, heartfelt ode to heartbreak that sways and grooves in an unforgettable fashion.
“Sometimes the best songs come from low moments. ‘Suzanne’s Finery’ is more or less a love letter that never got sent. It became a song instead,” explains Brendan. “I wish I didn’t ruminate on relationships, but I do. I question myself, the other person, and the motives of everybody. A big regret carnival.”
