Dave Gutter is a Grammy Award-winning songwriter, musician, singer, and producer from Portland, Maine. Gutter has co-written songs with Aaron Neville, David Bowie, The Tedeschi Trucks Band, Imogen Heap, James Poyser, Questlove?, The Black Violin, Eric Krasno, Spose, Wax, Grammatik, Griz, Sydney Franklin, and many more.
As a Maine native, Gutter is a legend in his own right, serving as the frontman and primary songwriter for Rustic Overtones for over 20 years. Rustic Overtones were signed by Clive Davis and made their debut label release with legendary collaborators Tony Visconti and David Bowie. Rustic Overtones has a large grassroots following in the Northeast and continues to perform live.
As an industry veteran, Gutter has seen the ins and outs of it all. On his new single, “Gold Records,” the artist sets his views on the trend-grasping, greedy music industry to a lighthearted jazz ballad of autobiographical proportions. On the new single, Gutter explores the insecurities of not living up to conventional standards of success and overcoming those insecurities, creating a whirlwind of emotions that range from self-love to self-doubt. “Gold Records” features infectious melodies that sway as easily as the industry types Gutter aims to take down in the lyrics. There is a longing in the words and vocals on “Gold Records” that is palpable, but Gutter is expressing far from a defeatist attitude. Rather than wallow, Gutter pieces together a stunning performance that captures the roller coaster that has been his career. Gutter is set to release his new LP on June 9, and “Gold Records” adds another log to the fire of anticipation for this release. The latest single from the LP is a soulful, vulnerable outing that showcases Gutter’s fearless artistry.
“I feel like it needs to be stated that this album is kind of a multiverse that I built from the concept behind Bread’s Guitar Man,” explains Gutter. “Also, I was very inspired by the theatrical concept albums of The Kinks, The Who, and The Beatles. It felt like time to bring back the underdog rock opera.”
