LISTEN: London Missile’s “Elijah Would” Is Refreshing and Emotional Pop With A Twist

London Missile is an experimental pop duo formed in early 2011 by Joshua Spicer and Chris Gunter. What originally started as a sound more akin to 80s synth wave has slowly shifted over the duo’s 14-year partnership into lush cacophonies of ethereal voices cascading down a fuzzy wall of droning harmonies and rhythms that have since become the band’s signature.

On their latest single, “Elijah Would,” the refreshing pop duo shows precisely why they are an exciting new face in the tired genre. While other pop artists chase popularity by incorporating trends and potential viral moments into their music, Gunter and Spicer showcase their hope for what the genre can become if more freedom is granted. “Elijah Would” is an immersive blend of shoegaze-style vocals that explode from behind a dense, fuzzy arrangement, washing over the listener with a blissful touch, and therein lies the magic of London Missile’s latest release. Just as you are drowning in the delicate wall of synths, passionate vocals jump from behind you like a horror character, but their intent is pure. The strep-throat vocal screeches beautifully break apart the consistency of “Elijah Would,” adding an element of surprise to the duo’s moving and undeniably individualistic single.
