LISTEN: Whenwolves Bring Lofty Indie Rock Visions To Life On Hypnotic”Aggro Crag”

Whenwolves was launched by Bobby Lewis during the 2020 lockdown alongside his production work on BODEGA’s second LP, Broken Equipment. After his previous band Mustardmind went quiet following a 2019 tour, Lewis began writing solo, eventually enlisting Eric Slick (Dr. Dog, solo) on drums and Kristin Slipp (mmeadows) on backing vocals for an EP. In 2022, a full band was formed, which includes his brother, Billy Lewis, on bass. The band’s debut EP Recon for the Weirdos arrived in March 2023, and 2025 will see a wave of new releases from the Lewis brothers, starting in July with the single “Aggro Crag”, inspired by Nickelodeon’s GUTS franchise of the 90s.

Whenwolves is a labor of love, and that compassion and care for their music shines on “Aggro Crag,” the band’s latest single. The new song toes the line between artsy experimentation and rootsy tradition, with the hazy vocals colliding with sturdy drums and sleek guitars, only for their lofty visions to take over. The name of the game is unpredictability, and “Aggro Crag” is filled with intoxicating twists and turns. What starts as a slow-burning indie rock turns quickly into a stadium-sized, blazing closer with blistering tempos that explode out of the speaker, aimed directly at your soul. The tempo shift in the middle of “Aggro Crag” adds that experimental flair that makes Whenwolves such an exciting band to begin with. With a promise of new releases throughout 2025, Whenwolves unleash their latest creation in the form of the warping and rewarding “Aggro Crag.”
