LISTEN: Pynch Dig Through Influences To Find Singularity On “Post-Punk / New-Wave”

Pynch returns with Beautiful Noise, their most ambitious and personal work to date. Written and produced by Spencer Enock in the band’s Brixton bedroom studio, the album is a lo-fi exploration of love, death, and the pursuit of meaning through art. Fusing glitchy electronics with slacker rock charm and poetic sincerity, Beautiful Noise carves out its own space somewhere between Pavement, Blur, and New Order.

Released via the band’s label Chillburn Recordings, the record introduces new member Myles Gammon on synths and features vocals and drums from Julianna Hopkins. The artwork comes courtesy of Spencer’s brother, Scott, who used hand-developed 35mm photos to echo the record’s DIY spirit visually. Beautiful Noise is a document of a band unafraid to be vulnerable, ask questions, and create something messy, human, and quietly transcendent. Beautiful Noise is set to be released on October 3.

As the anticipated release from Pynch seems worlds away, the band drops off “Post-Punk / New-Wave,” the lead single from Beautiful Noise. The new single is a stunning blend of all of the genres and bands that Pynch has been compared to over their careers, but what is miraculous is the fact that “Post-Punk / New-Wave” doesn’t sound like any of the genres it references. The band whittled down these influences to their bones, reconstructing an alien-like skeleton that grooves to the jovial melodies and headbangs to the ripping guitar sections. By leaning into expectations, Pynch simultaneously destroys them with an infectious performance that they can call their own. The warping arrangement spans from acoustic bliss to glistening indie rock, while the vocals incorporate subtle hints of pop that intersect with the raw passion the band brings to everything they touch. If the rest of Beautiful Noise is anything like “Post-Punk / New-Wave,” we are in for an expressive, unique LP from a promising young band.
