Tequila Sirens formed in Somerville, Massachusetts, when Shaun Curran (keys, vocals) and former Soft Pyramids frontman Dwight Hutchenson (guitar, vocals) began collaborating remotely during the COVID lockdown. What started as a creative outlet during a difficult period eventually grew into a full band with the addition of Whit Love (bass) and Matt Masuzzo (drums). The band’s new album, Imposters, was released on June 6.
“Scenery Chewers” is the chaotic stand-out tune from Imposters with complex danceability and eerie synths. Immediately upon pressing play, you are thrown into a tunnel of colorful textures, thudding drums colliding with searing guitars, and strep-throat style vocals that sneak from around the dense wall of sound. There is a lo-fi warmth hidden under the busy arrangement that beautifully juxtaposes the carnival of sounds that wash over the listener during “Scenery Chewers.” While the vocals feel distant under the arrangement, the lyrics are just as big a player in the song’s stunning hecticness. “Scenery Chewers” attacks the over-dramatic and how Tequila Sirens have grown weary of the overacting of modern times. The band executes their vision with careful attention to detail and fearless artistry, allowing “Scenery Chewers” to play as a lofty vision coming to life before your very eyes.
