Tommy Moom$ has been through a few artistic revolutions, but this is his most natural form yet. Playing in hardcore punk bands, going down an acoustic route, and then finding the world of rap, his musical journey has contained a lot of twists and turns. Formerly part of Flimsey Lohan, he embraced the moniker of Tommy Moom$ following the dissolution of the band. Influenced by both hardcore punk and rappers like Freddie Gibbs, Lord Apex, Biggie Smalls, and Griselda, as well as other trailblazers like Frank Ocean and Shlohmo, his style is as refreshing as it is singular.
The latest single from Moom$, “Where She,” is dripping with jazz and soul. The soaring arrangement blossoms like a flower upon pressing play, engulfing the listener in a microcosm of safety, plus textures, and twinkling piano keys. The instrumental, created by Moom$’s frequent collaborator Teyos, feels like a celebration of life, but the lo-fi warmth of the vocals anchors the performance to a sense of reality. Moom$’s vocals radiate with authenticity, emotional vulnerability, and relaxed tones that cascade around the nostalgic instrumental. The artist approaches his lyrics the way a poet approaches an emotion. Moom$’s vague yet potent approach to songwriting allows the artist to intertwine fantastical imagery with reality-shattering truths, creating an enticing sonic conflict between the swaying instrumental and the heartfelt lyrics. “Where She” introduces Moom$ as a raw lyricist unable to speak unless it is wholeheartedly authentic, and that honesty shines through the cracks of Teyos’s prowess on their latest collaboration.
