Son Volt is preparing to release its fifth full-length, "The Search," on March 6 via Transmit Sound/Legacy. The follow-up to 2005’s "Okemah and the Melody of Riot," "The Search" was produced by frontman Jay Farrar, who suggests that the title is indicative of the band’s increasingly diversified sound.
"The Search" finds Son Volt toying with more electric atmospheres, horns and pedal loops. Farrar was joined again by drummer Dave Bryson, bassist Andrew Duplantis and guitarist Brad Rice. A new addition was keyboardist Derry DeBorja, but the entire backing crew helped to expand what Farrar describes as the "underlying textures." Shannon McNally also contributes harmony vocals on the album’s "Highways and Cigarettes."
