Arbouretum: Rites of Uncovering

[rating=3.50]

Arbouretum’s Rites of Uncovering is an adventurous experiment built upon the organic musical tendencies of David Heumann; tendencies which contrast the more architectural and linear constructions often found in modern indie music. More importantly, it is a proliferation of delicate, post-rock sounds that bubble to the surface lightly; modern progressions decorated with nuances illuminated by a touch of modest expressionism that often breaks to pieces beneath the weight of experimental sound. Heumann claims that the album was influenced by Paul Bowles, the expatriate American writer and composer responsible for The Sheltering Sky, and renowned for his dark illustrations spawned from cultural diversity. But awareness of this influence isn’t necessary for understanding the colorful verse that Heumann weaves into his vast-but-fleeting sonic discourse. Arbouretum effectively cultivates a range of eccentric themes, but succeeds most fully when conjuring pastoral melodies laced with grinding distorted guitar. While an acquired taste, Rites of Uncovering is as brave as it is cathartic.
