Stars of Track and Field: Neumo’s, Seattle, WA 5/02/07

Few bands in recent memory have caught the ears of this reviewer like Stars of Track and Field.  This Portland-based trio has sprung into indie musical consciousness, with but one full-length to their credit, creating a repertoire of gorgeous, riff-laden, perfectly-crafted pop songs.

Currently touring with Joseph Arthur (who, following SOTAF’s opening set, put on his own solid show), SOTAF are supporting their debut album, Centuries Before Love and War.  The album is a well-produced masterpiece, expertly alternating between wistful-seeming melodic lines and aggressive, guitar-pounding romps.  Indeed, the likeability of all tracks on the album puts it in the leagues of Pearl Jam’s Ten, or Midnight Oil’s Diesel and Dust – albums upon which no song sticks out as being unworthy of the company of the others.  Live, the band manages to demonstrate the chemistry that fuels this creativity, seamlessly flowing from straight-ahead guitar rock into melodic three-part harmony.  Frontmen Kevin Calaba and Jason Bell perfectly complement one another: Bell occasionally seems to be near seizure as he flails at his guitar, while Calaba retains a cool self-assuredness.  Meanwhile, drummer Daniel Orvik convincingly plays the part of bassist and drummer, comfortably owning the rhythmic needs of the band.  Vocals are shared mainly between Calaba and Bell, with occasional third-part harmony from Orvik, and nearly nowhere were there flaws to be found; the three blend exceptionally well, adding a richness to the music far greater than their three-person size.

For those convinced that all indie rockers are cut from the same cloth, Stars of Track and Field are not to be missed: their energy, gorgeous music, and stage presence are truly worth witnessing live.
