The Honeydogs: Sunshine Committee (EP)

[rating=4.00]

What could a band called The Honeydogs with a CD titled Sunshine Committee possibly have to offer? Do not be deceived by the backwoods name, the syrupy title, or even the psychedelic Python-esque design on the cover. Like previous releases, this 6-song EP is graced with sophisticated chord changes, Beatles-like harmonies, and the kind of edgy lyrics that put The Honeydogs in the same league as XTC. The title track contains enough sexual imagery to qualify for a black rectangle, “Good Fight” and “Stash” both deal with the power of emotions, and “Balaclava” offers an empathetic look through the eyes of a terrorist.

The Honeydogs owe most of their artistry to one man, and as if one band wasn’t enough to contain his creative energy, writer, lead vocalist, and lead guitarist Adam Levy also teaches and fronts two other bands: Hookers $ Blow and The Bunny Clogs—a children’s music band that scored him a place on a panel discussion at SXSW ‘09. Most bands are satisfied with a few really good tracks on their albums. The Honeydogs, however, consistently provide releases filled with quality songs. Sunshine Committee is merely their most recent offering in a long line of groove.
