Nashville-based rock band The Prescriptions recently released their debut album Hollywood Gold through Single Lock Records. In an interview with lead singer and songwriter Hays Ragsdale, Billboard stated that Hollywood Gold, “demonstrates a considerable breadth in Ragsdale’s writing, ranging from Laurel Canyon folk rock and Americana to echoes of vibey new wave and power pop.” Indeed, it’s easy to pick up on an array of influences in the band’s music, ranging from 70s folk to guitar-driven melodies of The Strokes’ early recordings and the experimental energy of Wilco.
Buzz has been building in the band’s local Nashville community since their formation several years ago, as well as in their hometown of Birmingham, Alabama. While The Prescriptions may come by their Southern style of narrative songwriting honestly, they refuse to rest on the laurels of their musical heritage. Currently, the band is on tour throughout the month of June supporting John Paul White of the Civil Wars.
Today Glide is excited to premiere the music video for “She is Waiting”, one of the standout tracks on Hollywood Gold. This tune finds the band delving into more of an alt-country sound that seems fitting for the world-weary lyrical stream of consciousness. There is also a jangly guitar rock sound to the song and an undertone of power pop, with the catchiness of the tune bringing to mind fellow Alabamians and Single Lock labelmates Belle Adair. The band’s ability to write infectious, guitar-driven rock songs – increasingly harder to come by these days – makes them an act to watch.
Front man Hays Ragsdale shares the story behind how “She is Waiting” came to be:
“I wrote ‘She Is Waiting’ shortly after moving to Nashville while crashing on my friend’s couch. I was getting into that bright sounding guitar driven rock like Big Star and the sound of alt country clashing guitars. The song ended up about being in a new city and feeling hopeful that you’ll meet someone, but in the end, you just end up lonely and having that ‘why try?’ feeling.”
