Peter Frampton and his band did not let any barriers whatsoever stand in their way as they delighted his bevy of fans with hits, deep cuts and choice cover songs on July 9th, at the Rockland Trust Bank Pavilion in Boston. The legendary guitarist not only brought his classic riffs and unmistakable voice to the pavilion, but he brought a bright smile and funny asides that proved he was enjoying himself while battling through a recently diagnosed autoimmune disease that has undoubtedly forced the decision to retire from touring next fall.
After a quick video montage of career highlights that included his time with Humble Pie, his Frampton Comes Alive hey-day and his time with David Bowie, Frampton wasted no time tearing into a two-hour, career-spanning setlist after hitting the stage with his arsenal or Gibson electric guitars. The audience was treated to his solo-smash hits, “Baby I Love Your Way”, “Show Me the Way” and of course, the signature talk-box showpiece, “Do You Feel Like We Do”. Frampton also included classic blues covers from his latest hit album, All Blues – paying homage to the late, great Freddie King with “Me and My Guitar” and Same Old Blues”. Tributes were also paid to Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell with a hauntingly beautiful instrumental version of Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun” and a loving nod to George Harrison with a heartfelt “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” that brought the audience to their feet. And, for this man’s farewell tour, he did not disappoint. Frampton’s ability to engage with story and song, from the front row to the last – solidified his reputation for being the consummate performer.
