Dire Strait’s “Ride Across the River” is a great song. I recently started watching “The Last Ship” which used the song in Season 1.

Walk of Life
In 1978, as a young lieutenant stationed at Ft. Campbell, KY with the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), the local AOR FM radio station played in my platoon’s workspace during the day–and in my quarters at night. One day in the shop, I first heard ‘Sultans of Swing’, caught the artist’s name, and drove to the nearest record store in Clarksville, TN after work to buy the album. Less than a year later, the same radio station featured a ‘Beggar’s Banquet’ feature of a preview of Dire Straits’ new album, ‘Communique’, and I was fortunate enough to catch it; as the closing strains of its last song, ‘Follow Me Home’, faded into the evening, I knew I couldn’t stay in the Army any longer–‘outside’ lay something more, and Mark Knopfler had articulated it for me, and I left when my hitch was up, and never looked back, and that, as Robert Frost opined, ‘has made all the difference’. Since then, I have enjoyed a career as a teacher and now a sojourn as a retiree, during which time I have kept up with Mark’s music and own every album he has made; still, for all the moving music he and his bandmates have produced, it is the coda of ‘Follow Me Home’ that so pleasantly haunts me as I attempt to answer this prompt. It would be a privilege to win your prize of the box set. Thank you.
My favorite Straits song is ‘How Long’ from the album On Every Street!
Favourite Knopfler/DS song: Gonna sound trite, but “Sultans of Swing” live
From Sailing To Philadelphia, one of my favorites is Speedway At Nazareth
Telegraph Road
Sultans of Swing of course !
Tunnel Of Love from Making Movies!
Although I followed Dire Straits from 1978 with Sultans it was only Christmas 1980 when I started to play the guitar myself that I really locked onto Knopfler’s style and really fell in love with the strat. Tunnel Of Love has and always will be a special song for me especially the breakdown part in the song with the lines .. Girl it looks so pretty to me etc
.. and the subsequent play out.
As a kid living in Doncaster in Northern England me and me mates (we don’t say “my mates and I” up there) we always kicked around the local fair that visited the Town Moor race course (not Newcastle’s Town Moor a ref for the song along with Spanish City). So at 16 years old having suffered a few life blows already this song really gave me a lift.
