50 years ago today (4/20/70), Jethro Tull released Benefit, perhaps their most underrated LP. This, their third LP was the first Tull album to include pianist and organist John Evan and the last to include bass guitarist Glenn Cornick. The sound on Benefit helmed a different darker mood than their first two LPs (Ian Andreson would later call it “a guitar riff album.” Yet Tull’s history would be rescripted with 1971’s breakout LP Aqualung.
