Last night, a longish haired Trey Anastasio performed “I Never Needed You Like This Before” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The song is from Anastasio’s new album, Lonely Trip (Rubber Jungle), available now at all DSPs. With this performance, Anastasio became the first guest to perform in-studio on any late-night TV show since lockdown began in mid-March. “I’m still buzzing after playing with the Roots,” Anastasio told Pitchfork. “Man, I needed that. I don’t know what was better, feeling Questlove’s drums shaking my whole body or watching the crew in the back of the room dancing around while we played.”
Anastasio wrote and recorded the songs that make up Lonely Trip during lockdown at his home in New York City. He initially released them as they were finished via his instagram. All of the songs were remixed by longtime Anastasio studio collaborator Bryce Goggin.
