40 years ago today (3/14/82), Metallica played their first-ever live show, which took place at Radio City in Anaheim, CA. This early lineup of Metallica featured founders James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, along with Dave Mustaine (guitar) and Ron McGovney bass). Per the setlist below, the performance featured seven cover songs and two originals, as the band would soon be releasing their iconic debut Kill Em All. Although we got no recordings of the debut show to play, listen to the band perform “Seek and Destroy” live in ’82 a few months later.
