Jenner Fox’s latest single “Cooking for One” is one of those straight-ahead, matter-of-fact folk songs that can sneak up on you and leave a heartache that just kind of gets bigger for a while it all sinks in. As the title suggests, loneliness abounds, but it’s the simple imagery Fox uses to describe all the little blocks the loneliness is made up of that really makes the writing so poignant. All that combined with tight harmonies, solid picking, and a soft-spoken, ingenuos vocal delivery makes for a song that can hit close to home for almost anybody.
“I wrote the album “Good Luck Road” while working as an artist in residence in the small Wyoming town of Dayton. “Cooking For One” came in a pretty literal writing moment: my partner left for a wedding, I was newly alone in the residency house, I was making some sort of stir fry…a quarter of an onion, I put down the spatula and started fingerpicking a G chord. It made me think of a friend of mine living newly alone in a big house that was once filled with family. All the pictures on the walls. All the strength it takes to keep moving forward,” says Fox.
