25 years ago today (8/2/97), the great and highly influential Fela Aníkúlápó Kuti, died at the relatively young age of 58 from cancer, as he would have turned 80 this year (2022). Kuti’s stamp and influence on music are undeniable as the Nigerian multi-instrumentalist, bandleader, composer, and political activist helped spread Afrobeat to ears around the globe with his dynamic musical ensembles and live recordings.
