30 years ago today (10/6/92), Soul Asylum released their commercial breakthrough album Grave Dancers Union. The Minneapolis band led by Dave Pirner had already released five albums and had toured hard, but then upon the rise of an alternative music scene championed by MTV, Soul Asylum broke big in late 1992 and 1993 with the three big power pop singles off Grave Dancers Union: “Somebody To Shove,” “Black Gold,” and “Runaway Train,” with the latter winning a Grammy for best rock song in 1994.
