With the first month of 2023 wrapping up as quickly as it started, we have arrived at the last new music Friday of the month. Shifting through the new releases, it’s the highlight of any music nerd’s week, it’s like Christmas once a week. Waking up every Friday morning to crack open your preferred streaming services and meticulously shift through the pages of new music hoping to see something new from an old favorite or new all around.

Today (January 27), might be the best new music Friday of the month. With the likes of Lil Yachty, The Arcs, and King Tuff releasing full LPs. All of these releases are following up a slew of albums being announced with the news of new music coming from Slowthai and Deem Spencer announcing new albums respectively, both being released this spring.

Shifting through all of these releases can be overwhelming, that’s what Glide is here for. We went through and picked our ca n’t-miss new releases for the week of January 23. Listen to our picks below:

Fucked Up – “Cicada

Album:  One Day

The ever-diverse sonic grab bag of the modern-day punk legends Fucked Up just got a little bigger. Today, the band releases their brand new studio album One Day, a collection of hasty punk that is smoothed over with smile-inducing harmonies and off-kilter song structures. “Cicada” is a stand-out from the album, the sonic netting of the blurry arrangement allows the vocals to melt into the rest of the song, giving an atmospheric texture to the whole song.

Les Imprimés – “I’ll Never Leave

Single

From the great people over at Big Crown Records comes their latest signee. Les Imprimés is a Norwegian multi-instrumentalist who has become one of the most sought-after producers in his scene. His debut for his new label is the spacious neo-soul-tinged “I’ll Never Leave”, its dream-like arrangement sees the falsetto of Imprimés act as an anchor to keep you from getting lost in the track.

Bass Drum of Death – “White Vince

Album: Say I Won’t

This blistering acoustic track comes from Bass Drum of Death’s first new album since 2018. Say I Won’t sees the frontman John Barrett diving into collaboration and exploring new sides of his musicianship, “White Vine” is the perfect example of this. The high-tempo acoustic guitar strumming is greeted with throat-scratching vocals from Barrett whose melody on this song is one of the most infectious he has ever written.

Slowthai – “Selfish

Album: UGLY

For the first glimpse into Slowthai’s new punk-oriented album is everything you could ask for and more. Earlier this week it was announced that the U.K golden child will be releasing his third studio LP on March 3 of this year. Along with the album announcement, he gave us “Selfish”, a muddy melodic mess of an attempt at a new sonic world that paid off tremendously for Slowthai.

AJJ – Disposable Everything

Album: Disposable Everything

The folk-punk icons AJJ are gearing up for their new album set to be released on May 26 via Hopeless Records. This marks the first LP from the band since 2020’s Good Luck Everybody. For a sneak preview into their new release, AJJ gave us a somber acoustic number that is so vulnerable, we can only hope the rest of their new album sounds as good as the title track.

Jonah Yano – In Sun, out of Sun (Feat. Slauson Malone)

Album: Portrait of a Dog

With the help of BadBadNotGood, singer/songwriter Jonah Yano just released one hell of a sophomore album. The spacious jazz of Yano’s new LP gives the whole album a sense of aloofness, although their attention to detail and masterful approach to crafting these songs says otherwise. On the light “In Sun, out of Sun”, Yano croons over a minimalistic instrumental, combining to radiate a warmth that is undeniably gorgeous.

Deem Spencer – 27 (Feat. DaVionne)

Album: adultSW!M

If you haven’t come across the music of Deem Spencer, you’re right on time. The young rapper/songwriter has been honing his sound for years, growing and perfecting himself in the shadows of hip-hop in order to find this new, self-aware approach to his records. His new album arrives on March 3 via the new imprint Drink Sum Wtr. “27” is the melodic track that is setting the tone for this new LP, bombastic drums and an unforgettable hook drive this song as we all anticipate what adultSW!M has in store for us.

The Arcs – Behind The Eyes

Album: Electrophonic Chronic

For their first album since 2015 and only their second album as a band, Dan Auerbach’s The Arcs are ready for their return. Their new album is an exploration into the worlds of blues and psychedelic and how these two worlds can mesh together. “Behind The Eyes” sees its unpredictable arrangement bounce from stadium size to coffee shop ballad, the way this instrumental swells up only to deflate itself makes it feel like the track is breathing all on its own.

Daniel Caesar – Do You Like Me?

Single

For fans of the R&B star Daniel Caesar, this new single might sound a little familiar. The artists began teasing this release via social media posts about a month ago and the day has finally arrived for the studio version of “Do You Like Me?” The bouncy track is innocent in its lyrics but mature in its use of simplicity.

Gorillaz – Silent Running (Feat. Adeleye Omotayo)

Album: Cracker Island

The ever generous digital band gifted us with another sneak peek into their highly anticipated new LP. After what feels like an hero’s journey of an album rollout, Gorillaz are finally gearing up to release Cracker Island but not without sending us into the album with the synth-drenched beauty of their new single “Silent Running” featuring Adeleye Omotayo.
