FRANKIIE, the Vancouver-based indie-pop outfit, is premiering the single “Garden” today on Glide. Out via Paper Bag Records, the track is the band’s first from their upcoming sophomore LP Between Dreams, due out June 2nd. Accompanied by a live performance music video, “Garden” is a culmination of 60’s surf rock and modern psychedelia that melts perfectly with the four-piece’s powerful yet melodramatic vocals.
Of the single, FRANKIIE’s keyboardist and vocalist Nashlyn Lloyd said, “it was inspired by writing retreats to the northern Sunshine Coast of British Columbia, where we could detach from the intensity of urban life and focus on music together. We would write all afternoon in the cabin, and take a break to slow down and watch the stars expand forever. The stillness I feel while listening to the ocean or being surrounded by trees is always something I am longing to reconnect with while living life in the city.”
Between Dreams’ sonic world weaves between reverb-soaked dream-pop, vintage classic-rock, bedroom-psych, and beachy shoegaze. It presents the dreamy and the real as one continuum between which there are no borders, and where magic is located all over. The band’s guitarist and vocalist Francesca Carbonneau says that the boundary-free feeling emerged while the band was writing the record during lock down and thereafter, which led to an attitude where control and power were relinquished to some degree, thus whatever happened creatively would be explored. “These songs were following a sense of intuition, and not really trying to have them be anything but what instinctively came out,” Carbonneau said. “There was no attempt to stick to a certain genre, or take ourselves too seriously.”
Stay tuned for what the springtime has in store for FRANKIIE and their dream-soaked sounds, and watch the live performance of “Garden,” out today, below.
