LISTEN: On “2nd Place” Tom McGuire and the Brassholes Fill It With Funk Tinged Brass

As far as we know, Glasgow isn’t well known for their Funk-tinged Brass band scene, but after hearing “2nd Place” (below) from Tom McGuire and the Brassholes more research might need to be done. They land swiftly into the pocket the song will remain in for the duration of the following five minutes of funk, but while the pocket stays deep, the band rises and falls with the dynamic expertise only a veteran live band can pull off. The Song feels like it’s hitting its climax a little past the halfway mark with the repeated chorus leading to a horn solo, but the real highlight might be the gospel-style breakdown that creates a chorus that sounds triple the size of the ones before. Go check out their new Album Stay Rad out now.
