On “Freak,” Michael Baker Flaunts Undeniable Cohesive Intimacy

There’s an undeniable intimacy to the sound captured on Michael Baker’s new single “Freak” that’s a welcomed reprieve from some overproduced indie folk songs out there today. Baker’s Voice sits in front of the mix nicely while still feeling cohesive with the rest of the instrumentation. The rhythm section at times creates a tight groove while pulling back out letting the electric piano and strings take the forefront. Baker’s songwriting and voice feels familiar in a lot of elements, but in the end he creates something that is truly all his own. It’d be a shame not to mention the gorgeous handmade animated video that pairs perfectly and accents the underlying psychedelia on this tune.
