A dreary June is wrapping up over here on the East Coast of the States and it’s sending us off with one last Friday of brand-spanking-new tracks. The rain is knocking at the windows and doors and nothing drowns out the sound of a storm better than a curated collection of the best new music to hit the public throughout our last full week of June. This year has seen some insanely impressive releases hit your local streaming service, it feels like every week we’re rearranging and rethinking our top five albums of the year. We’re officially over the midyear hump of 2023, let’s celebrate with our weekly selection of the best new music to come out in the past seven days.

Check out Glide’s picks for the best new music of the week below;

Thee Marloes – “Beri Cinta Waktu”

Single

For their second single after signing to Big Crown Records, Thee Marloes are slowing things down. Their slow-burning new single, “Beri Cinta Waktu”, first appeared as the vinyl-only B-side for their “Midnight Hotline” single and is now streaming everywhere. The velvet-lined vocals find a home over a minimal and soulful arrangement, it’s a moody tune with an infectious melody that demands to be played over and over again.

Faye Webster – “But Not Kiss”

Single

For her first release of 2023, the consistently impressive folk music of Faye Webster continues to evolve. “But Not Kiss” finds the perfect balance of crooning twang that swells into an emotional wall of power chords. Webster floats over the spontaneous arrangement to deliver lyrics of forced isolation and emotional barriers, all melting together for a colorful track that welcomes Faye Webster in a cloud of moody folk.

The Smile – “Bending Hectic”

Single

The Smile has had our undivided attention ever since their debut crashed into our lives in May of 2022. You can now take a break from listening to their debut record, the Radiohead offshoot is wasting no time giving us more visceral moments of rock. “Bending Hectic” is the ambient new single that is in no rush to impress, but will have you blown away nonetheless. The eight-minute escapade is worth every wiry melody and subtle drum pocket as a softly-strummed guitar pushes the track forward ever so slightly.

M. Ward – “too young to die” (Feat. First Aid Kit)

Supernatural Thing

M.Ward’s new album has finally arrived in full and it is everything we have built it up to be. Supernatural Thing is a stirring set of songs that paints the artist in a new light as they still find new ways to impress and evolve after decades of recorded music. “Too Young to Die” is the subtle duet with First Aid Kit that has the pair crooning about mortality and the journeys they take to come to terms with the inevitable over a whimsical guitar melody to balance out the song’s bleak lyrics.

Old Crow Medicine Machine – “Miles Away”

Jubilee

Quickly following up on their widely praised 2022 LP, Old Crow Medicine Machine seems to already miss their fans. The classic country outfit has announced Jubilee, their brand new album which is set to be released on August 25 via ATO Records. “Miles Away” is the lead single for this new album and already has us dreaming of what the rest of the record has in store. Their signature country style is met with soaring string sections with a little vocal help from the band’s original co-founder Willie Watson.

Slowdive – “kisses”

Everything is alive

It has been six years since Slowdive emerged to gift us new music, and they somehow have found the perfect time to make their triumphant return. “Kisses” is the band’s gift to us for their absence, it’s a single that humbly presents itself despite containing a universe of lush arrangements driven by fuzzy guitar melodies. The new single is lifted from everything is alive, the band’s first album since their self-titled 2017 release, is set to be released on September 1 via Dead Oceans.

Baroness – “Last Word”

Stone

Do not try to match your head-banging with the blistering tempos of Baroness’s new single, you may end up in a neck brace. The thrashing rockers have returned with “Last Word”, the colossal lead single from their upcoming Stone LP set to be released on September 15. The gruff vocals are the only thing that can keep up with the spastic musicianship of Baroness, creating an almost spiritual listening experience.

The Bones of J.R. Jones – “Heaven Help Me”

Slow Lightning

The Bones of J.R. Jones is finally prepping a follow-up for their 2018 LP and its debut single has our imaginations running wild. Slow Lighting is set to be released on October 13 and will feature the recently released single “Heaven Help Me”. The album’s lead single features a chugging guitar riff that matches the energy of the fiery vocal delivery, all paired with a classic blues sound that gives the track its unforgettable textures.

Woods – “Between The Past”

Perennial

The band Woods has always looked to switch up their sound with every release, and this latest one is no exception. Their signature fusion of soft rock tendencies with folk tropes has made them stable in each genre respectively and that marriage is on full display via “Between The Past”. The pop-centric single features throat-scratching vocals that seem like they’re trying to break free of the droning synth. The single is set to appear on Perennial, the band’s new album which is set to be released on September 15.

Atmosphere – “Body Pillow”

Sad Clown Bad Dub 2

Originally released in 2000, this forgotten release from the hip-hop duo Atmosphere is getting a proper release. Sad Clown Bad Dub 2 was a CD-only release and is now being reissued on vinyl and digitally via Rhymesayers Entertainment. “Body Pillow” is our lead single for the project, it’s a vivid storytelling track that allows vocalist/songwriter Slug to let go of everything on his mind over haunting piano chords.

GEESE – “2122”

3D Country

No one could’ve predicted what GEESE had in store for their sophomore effort, a team of experts couldn’t have guessed they would bring tropes of country music into their post-punk onslaught. 3D Country is finally yours to enjoy, and it is the must-hear album of the week. “2122” is the explosive intro to this cosmic journey of an album, a perfectly abrasive welcome into the unpredictable world of GEESE.

Dominic Fike – “Mama’s Boy”

Sunburn

Dominic Fike’s long-awaited sophomore album is just weeks away and the latest single couldn’t have built up our excitement anymore. “Mama’s Boy” is an off-kilter track that blends R&B tendencies with Fike’s love of rock, a perfect fusion for Fike to introduce us to a new side of his vocal delivery. Sunburn is set to be released on July 7.
