Portland, OR Music Series The Get Down Funk Collective Brings Together Local and Regional Talent for Improvisational Jams (PREVIEW)

Fans of live music sometimes find themselves putting together their dream musical lineups. They imagine the guitarist from a favorite band playing with a keyboardist from a different group. And what if the rhythm section from another favorite band joined in for a jam?

One music lover in the Pacific Northwest has decided to manifest some of his musical dream lineups, at least on a regional level. Jeremy Sievert, a longtime lover of live music, has supported the scene by promoting bands and hosting private shows at his home a few miles outside of Portland, Oregon. In December of 2022, Sievert, along with Blake Boris-Schacter, the owner of Portland venue The Get Down, launched The Get Down Funk Collective, a platform to showcase the amazing talent within the Portland music scene with lineups that local music fans don’t normally get to see.

Portland is awash with musical talent, and while cross-pollination takes place regularly when scenes overlap, there are a lot of musicians who rarely, if ever, get a chance to play together. The Get Down Funk Collective allows for one-off showcase shows. Opening in April of 2022, The Get Down is a 400-capacity venue that has gained a reputation for doing thing right by musicians and music-loving patrons alike. The first three episodes of the funk collective featured musicians who have played with the likes of John Legend, Bootsy Collins, Joshua Redman, The Motet, Liv Warfield and Stevie Wonder. The collective uses songs from bands like The Meters, Billy Preston, and The Headhunters as improvisational launching pads.

The Get Down Funk Collective Music Series, Episode #4 is set to take place at The Get Down on Thursday, February 8th. Doors open at 7:00 with music starting promptly at 8:00. Two Sets. Sievert has expanded his vision to include some Seattle heavyweights on the bill. He says to expect an all instrumental, heady, horn-infused dual guitar throw down.
