You come for the groovy guitar riffs and stay for the post-punk-inspired vocals on Passat Acts’ “BREAK.” The beauty is in the simplicity of this record. By keeping the arrangement minimal yet rugged, the band is able to evoke the classic feeling of punk. They combine this with modern vocal melodies that nod to the burgeoning post-punk scene. The band’s ability to create danceable melodies yet deliver them in such a dark, fuzzed-out manner shows Passat Act’s diversity. “BREAK” comes in waves with an explosive hook that is more akin to a Mortal Kombat fatality sequence than a typical crescendo. The verses, on the other hand, feature soothing yet fierce guitar work as warping vocals coil around hypnotic drum patterns. Passat Act’s “BREAK” is meditative punk. The track evokes a palpable aggression that is subdued by simplistic song structure and distorted funk.
“‘BREAK’ captures the intensity and simplicity of Passat Act’s sound – angular and intertwined arrangements with every instrument forming an equal part of the sound,” explains the band. “Lyrically, the song focuses on release from the daily necessities.”
